Nigeria and United States Accelerate Energy Sector Reforms

Stakeholders in Nigeria called for deeper reforms and public‑private partnerships to turn the country’s oil, gas and renewable potential into industrial growth during an Energy Day event in Lagos. Speakers highlighted recent reforms such as the Petroleum Industry Act, fuel‑subsidy removal and a new power‑sector debt‑reduction programme, noting that local petrol production has risen and foreign‑exchange pressure has eased.

In the United States, lawmakers and industry leaders urged Congress to speed up environmental review and permitting processes for energy projects, arguing that delays hinder affordability, reliability and broader economic competitiveness. Senators from both parties stressed the bipartisan nature of the effort and its relevance to renewables, pipelines, nuclear power and other infrastructure.

Both initiatives emphasize the need for faster, transparent investment mechanisms to support growing energy demand and to enhance national competitiveness.
