Nigeria implements digital reforms to combat certificate fraud
Nigeria is implementing a series of digital reforms to overhaul its education system and combat certificate fraud. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced that the government is working with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to create a digital link for the seamless exchange and verification of graduates' academic records.
To enhance transparency, the Ministry has fully automated the academic credential evaluation and authentication process, allowing applicants to complete these services online. Additionally, the Nigerian Education Repository Data Bank is actively collecting and verifying university certificates, while the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure aims to link learner records across all educational stages.
Regarding institutional quality, the government is cracking down on accreditation fraud. Dr. Alausa warned that tertiary institutions must no longer borrow staff, equipment, or facilities to meet accreditation standards. He stated that officials found manipulating these processes risk losing their jobs, and private institutions could face the revocation of their operating licenses.
In a separate digital initiative, the government has launched a Digital Training Academy. Following a competitive application process involving over 72,000 candidates, 16,000 Nigerians have been selected for the inaugural cohort to receive globally recognized digital skills training via platforms like Coursera and PluralSight.
