Nigeria Christian fatalities reach high levels amid militia violence

A new report from the Christian aid group Equipping the Persecuted reveals that an average of one Christian was killed every 86 minutes in Nigeria through early September this year. The group documented at least 4,216 Christian deaths between January 1 and September 8, noting that the actual figure is likely higher. The violence has reportedly displaced more than 5 million Christians and impacted over 600 communities.

Much of the conflict is concentrated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where armed groups have targeted farming communities, burned churches, and kidnapped residents. Researchers identified armed Fulani groups as the primary threat in states including Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Taraba, and the Southern Kaduna region. Data from the Nigeria Terror Tracker indicates that Fulani-linked fighters caused more than four times as many deaths as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province combined during the same period.

Recent specific incidents in Plateau state include a September 20 attack by Fulani gunmen that killed a Baptist pastor and his secretary. Other attacks in September across various villages in the region resulted in multiple fatalities, including five people killed in an ambush in Gana-Ropp village.
