Nigeria commissions 3MW solar hybrid project at Yakubu Gowon University
The Nigerian Federal Government has commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid mini-grid project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja. The project was launched under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme (EEP) in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency and the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electrification Project.
The installation includes a 3.3 MWp solar array, 3MW of AC output capacity, and 2 MWh of battery storage to maintain power for critical loads after sunset. The facility also features a dedicated grid connection for non-critical demand. The project aims to support academic research, digital infrastructure, and campus security, while reducing the university's reliance on diesel generators.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe noted that the initiative is expected to benefit approximately 58,726 students. The project also includes the establishment of a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre, which has already provided training for 300 students. The EEP initiative encompasses seven universities and two teaching hospitals across the country.
