Solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University
Overview
The Nigerian Federal Government has commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid mini-grid project at Yakubu Gowon University (formerly the University of Abuja). Developed under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency and the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electrification Project, the facility includes a 3.3 MWp solar array, 3MW of AC output capacity, and 2 MWh of battery storage.
The project aims to provide reliable electricity to approximately 58,000 students and staff, supporting academic research, digital infrastructure, and campus security while reducing dependence on diesel generators. Additional components include the installation of 388 solar-powered streetlights and the establishment of a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre. The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has inspected and certified the project to ensure compliance with safety and technical standards.
