Nigeria expands power transmission capacity in Kano and Katsina
The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Power, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and in partnership with state governments, has commissioned several major electricity projects to boost capacity in Northern Nigeria.
In Kano State, four transmission substations—Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi—have been commissioned, adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to the grid. These upgrades aim to support industrial, commercial, and residential areas, including the Tokarawa Industrial Area. Notably, the Lee Group has been reconnected to the national grid after operating off-grid for over 30 years, and the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation has regained capacity to serve the Kano ancient town and the Emir’s Palace.
In Katsina State, the government has upgraded the Kankia Transmission Substation, increasing its capacity from 60MVA to 150MVA (approximately 120MW). Additionally, groundbreaking has commenced for a new 120MVA substation in Mashi. These projects, supported by the World Bank and executed by China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute, are intended to improve electricity reliability for the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company and local agricultural producers.
