Nigeria Customs launches electronic cargo tracking system at PTML command

The Port and Terminal Multiservices Ltd (PTML) area command of the Nigeria Customs Service was selected as the second pilot site for the Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS), following its successful rollout at the Apapa command. The rollout was announced at a stakeholder sensitisation workshop in Lagos, where Comptroller Nura Miko urged partners to adopt the system to improve cargo security, trade facilitation and revenue assurance.

The ECTS replaces the previous practice of physically escorting cargo between bonded terminals, customs commands and free‑trade zones. Using GPS‑based real‑time monitoring, the system will trigger alerts for route deviations, seal tampering or unauthorised stops, helping to prevent cargo diversion and leakage. Officials said the technology will speed clearance, cut logistics costs, optimise manpower and enhance transparency and revenue collection. The initiative is part of a broader modernisation programme under Comptroller‑General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, aimed at building a technology‑driven, efficient customs service.

Deputy Comptroller Regina Owan highlighted the system’s role in safeguarding cargo integrity and supporting legitimate trade, while stakeholders were encouraged to support the deployment to maximise its benefits for Nigeria’s trade ecosystem.
