Overview
Nigeria’s digital customs reforms continue to drive revenue and operational modernization. The deployment of the indigenous ‘B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System’, alongside geospatial technology and expanded post-clearance audits, remains central to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) strategy to balance enforcement with trade facilitation. Financially, the NCS reported generating ₦4.30 trillion in revenue during the first half of 2026, representing 36.4 per cent of its ₦11.074 trillion annual target.
Regional enforcement has seen significant breakthroughs in contraband interception. In September 2026, the NCS conducted major seizures at the Apapa Port in Lagos, intercepting 13 containers with a combined duty paid value of approximately ₦43.59 billion. In mid-September, the Port Harcourt Area II Command seized 56 containers at Onne Port in Rivers State, containing vegetable oil, used clothing, and foreign tomato paste valued at ₦5.53 billion.
At Tin Can Island Port, the NCS and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency intercepted two 40-foot containers in September containing suspected illicit drugs valued at approximately ₦3.67 billion. These shipments, traced to Canada, included over 1,200 kilograms of cannabis-infused products and Cannabis Indica concealed alongside used vehicles and spare parts.
In the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, authorities intercepted $265,000 in undeclared foreign currency, unregistered pharmaceuticals, and over 3,000 cartons of herbicide containing a prohibited chemical at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on September 26, 2026. Acting Area Controller Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu stated the interception aligns with efforts to “combat illicit financial flows and protect public health.” Since January, the command has intercepted undeclared currency and negotiable instruments exceeding ₦2.5 billion.
