Nigeria Customs seizes $265,000 and prohibited goods in Kano

The Nigeria Customs Service Kano/Jigawa Area Command intercepted $265,000 in undeclared foreign currency, unregistered pharmaceutical products, and over 3,000 cartons of herbicide containing a prohibited chemical at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

The currency was discovered on September 26, 2026, during a routine screening of a male Nigerian passenger arriving from New Delhi on Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET941. Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology flagged the luggage, leading to a physical examination that revealed the concealed cash.

Acting Area Controller Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu stated that the interception aligns with intensified efforts to combat illicit financial flows and protect public health. The passenger and the seized items will be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation. Adamu noted that since January, the command has intercepted undeclared currency and negotiable instruments valued at more than N2.5 billion.
