Nigeria merchandise trade rises to ₦41.44tn in Q2 2026

Nigeria's merchandise trade reached approximately ₦41.44 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, marking a 19.13% increase from the first quarter of the year. This growth was driven by exports, which were valued at ₦27.02 trillion, accounting for 65.20% of total trade. Crude oil remained the dominant export commodity at ₦12.91 trillion, though non-crude exports collectively contributed a higher aggregate value of ₦14.10 trillion. Imports for the period were valued at ₦14.42 trillion, resulting in a trade surplus of roughly ₦12.6 trillion.

China continues to be Nigeria's primary import partner. On the institutional front, the Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB), chaired by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, recently confirmed the appointment of one Deputy Comptroller-General and five Assistant Comptroller-Generals. The Board also reviewed the Service's revenue performance, noting that collections reached ₦4.30 trillion by the end of June 2026, representing 36.4% of the ₦11.074 trillion annual target. The government has emphasized the need for the Nigeria Customs Service to modernize operations through automation and improved cargo clearance to boost national competitiveness.
