Nigeria Customs Service rolls out digital tracking system and pushes strategic communication reforms

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) began a pilot of its Management Information System (MIS) and Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) at the PTML Area Command in Lagos on 21 July 2026. Deputy Comptroller‑General Oluyomi Adebakin represented Comptroller‑General Adewale Adeniyi at the launch, noting that modernisation is essential for border management. PTML officials said the command, which already clears cargo in about two hours, aims to cut clearance time to one hour using the new digital platforms.

At the closing ceremony of the 2026 NCS Public Relations Conference in Port Harcourt, Comptroller‑General Adeniyi urged Public Relations Officers to adopt proactive, research‑driven communication to strengthen public trust and support reforms. The conference also honoured Adeniyi with a Lifetime Achievement Award and recognised DSC SM Suleiman with the Best Anti‑Smuggling Awareness Campaign Award.

The service highlighted its anti‑smuggling achievements, citing seizures over the past three years that include 40 shipments of unauthorised pharmaceuticals worth N3.04 billion, thousands of firearms, more than 14,000 parcels of cannabis, around 200,000 L of petroleum products, and undeclared foreign currency worth hundreds of millions of naira.
