Nigeria Customs Service adopts annual recruitment and expands digital trade reforms
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced that it will shift to an annual recruitment cycle, with the next exercise slated to open later in 2026. In the 2024/2025 recruitment drive, 3,852 candidates were selected from 573,680 applicants across three entry cadres – 1,275 superintendents, 367 inspectors and 2,210 assistants.
The service reported strong fiscal performance, generating ₦3.35 trillion in the first quarter of 2026 – 30.25 % of its ₦11.074 trillion annual target – after posting ₦7.277 trillion in 2025, surpassing that year’s target by 10.24 %. The Comptroller‑General, Adewale Adeniyi, called on the Senate Committee to strengthen legislative oversight of the reforms, including a review of the 2023 Customs Act and the growing import‑duty waiver regime.
Digital modernisation continues with the rollout of the National Single Window (NSW) platform, which has issued over 100,000 licences and permits and registered more than 1,000 users, and the launch of a Management Information System (MIS) File Tracker at the PTML Area Command. The Shippers’ Council also partnered with Providus Unity Bank to explore financing for maritime projects that support Nigeria’s ambition to reach a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
