Nigeria Defence Chief Urges Stronger Global Security Cooperation at African Chiefs Conference

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, led the country’s delegation to the 2026 African Chiefs of Defence Conference (ACHOD) in Luanda, Angola, from June 30 to July 2. In statements released in Abuja, Oluyede called for a resilient and adaptive security architecture across Africa, stressing the need for stronger regional intelligence cooperation, revitalised security institutions, integrated border management and vigorous action against terrorism financing.

He highlighted the bilateral defence partnership with the United States as a model that has boosted the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Armed Forces and contributed to regional security. The conference, hosted jointly by the U.S. Africa Command and the Angolan Armed Forces, also addressed innovation, economic development, disinformation and the responsible use of drones in modern military operations. Oluyede held bilateral meetings with fellow chiefs and strategic partners to deepen cooperation against trans‑national threats that “do not respect borders.”
