Nigeria Dismantles Largest Meth Lab, Seizes $360 Million of Meth
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) dismantled the country’s biggest methamphetamine laboratory ever discovered. The forest‑side facility in Ogun State, covering roughly 4,000 sq m near the villages of Abidagba and Iroto, contained vats, boilers, propane cylinders and caustic soda used to produce crude meth. More than two tonnes of the drug, valued at about $360 million, were seized.
Three Mexican nationals and several Nigerians, including a self‑identified meth‑expert, were arrested in May; ten people in total, seven of them Nigerians, were taken into custody. A court hearing was held on‑site by Justice Musa Kakaki to assess the operation, and a court order ordered the site’s dismantling on public‑health grounds after toxic vapours were found to have polluted groundwater and air. The bust highlights the involvement of Mexican cartel specialists in West Africa’s expanding synthetic‑drug trade.
