Nigeria divided over UK travel advisory and security warnings

A recent travel advisory issued by the United Kingdom regarding security risks in Nigeria has sparked significant debate across the country. The advisory, which warns British nationals against travel to certain parts of several Nigerian states due to terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime, has drawn criticism from various northern regional leaders and groups.

Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, Convener of the Arewa Think Tank, urged foreign governments to “give the country some breathing space” and cautioned against issuing warnings that might portray the entire nation as unsafe, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach. Similarly, the Coalition of Northern Groups warned against broad classifications that could unfairly label the entire North as insecure.

Opinions remain divided. While some opposition parties in Kwara state support the advisory as a reflection of worsening insecurity, officials in Kano, Gombe, Jigawa, Yobe, and Kaduna have rejected the assessment, maintaining their states are relatively peaceful. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential impact of these warnings on foreign investment, tourism, humanitarian operations, and international development efforts.
