UK international travel advisories and regulations
Overview
The United Kingdom has issued several travel advisories and regulatory updates affecting international travel.
In July 2026, the UK published an updated list of prohibited items for travelers entering the country, expanding bans to include controlled drugs, offensive weapons, certain animal and plant species, and restricted food imports. Simultaneously, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued a security advisory for Kenya, warning of terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime risks near the Somalia border and in specific counties.
In August 2026, the UK expanded its security warnings to Nigeria. The FCDO advised against all travel to 11 specific states, including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe in the North-East; Katsina and Zamfara in the North-West; and riverine and swamp areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. It recommended against all but essential travel to 19 other states and the Federal Capital Territory, noting that “No travel can be guaranteed safe” and that ignoring these guidelines could invalidate travel insurance.
The advisory has sparked debate within Nigeria. Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, Convener of the Arewa Think Tank, urged foreign governments to “give the country some breathing space” to avoid portraying the nation as unsafe ahead of the 2027 general elections. While some opposition parties in Kwara state support the advisory due to insecurity, officials in Kano, Gombe, Jigawa, Yobe, and Kaduna have rejected the assessment. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of these warnings on tourism, foreign investment, and humanitarian operations.
