Nigeria drug officials call for traditional and community leaders to curb rising abuse

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa urged traditional rulers to join the fight against drug abuse and protect the girl‑child, saying poverty, abuse and lack of education drive women and youth toward drugs. Speaking at a book launch in Kaduna, Marwa warned that safeguarding girls strengthens families and the nation.

Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, wife of the Zamfara State governor and chair of the State Drug Control Committee, called for a multi‑sectoral alliance and innovative policies to address the growing threat of synthetic substances. She announced the state’s approval of a new drug‑rehabilitation centre and described outreach efforts to schools and markets. Both officials highlighted the need for coordinated action among security agencies, health professionals, religious and traditional leaders.

The combined appeals aim to shift cultural paradigms, expand treatment options and reduce the socio‑economic impact of drug abuse across Nigeria.
