Nigeria electoral preparations intensify ahead of local and general polls

In Enugu State, the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has initiated preparations for local government elections scheduled for September 26, 2026. Executive Chairman Prof Christian Ngwu announced a train-the-trainers programme designed to equip electoral officers and directors with the necessary skills to manage polls across 17 local government areas and 260 wards. This capacity-building effort follows previous training supported by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

On a national level, discussions regarding Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections have emerged. Concerns have been raised regarding the conduct of political parties and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Observers have noted that some political actors began campaigning ahead of official timelines, a challenge exacerbated by the rise of social media.

Additionally, scrutiny has been directed at the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the composition of its campaign councils. Critics have questioned the propriety of including heads of critical state institutions—such as security and economic agencies—in partisan campaign roles, arguing that such officials should remain insulated to maintain state integrity and non-partisan service.
