Nigeria establishes Off-Grid Coordination Secretariat to streamline power projects

The Nigerian government has launched an Off-Grid Coordination Secretariat to streamline electricity projects and prevent the duplication of efforts across the power sector. This initiative, announced by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja, aims to manage risks and improve resource allocation by creating a centralized platform for market intelligence and data sharing.

REA Managing Director Abba Abubakar Aliyu noted that an AI-driven analysis of the 2024 and 2025 federal budgets revealed multiple government institutions are currently implementing overlapping power-related projects. The secretariat is intended to convene working groups and coordinate with state governments and private operators to ensure efficient delivery.

In a related effort to expand energy access, the Solar Power Naija programme has commenced its rollout, starting with the Jangefe community in Jigawa State. The program aims to eventually provide electricity to 25 million Nigerians through decentralized renewable energy solutions. The initial phase in Jigawa involves the installation of 1,000 solar home systems through the company A-SOLAR.
