Renewable energy expansion in West Africa

Overview

Efforts to expand renewable energy access and address electricity shortages are intensifying in West Africa through both government coordination and private initiatives.

In Nigeria, the government established an Off-Grid Coordination Secretariat via the Rural Electrification Agency to prevent overlapping projects and improve resource allocation. This follows an analysis showing multiple institutions were implementing redundant power-related programs. Simultaneously, the Solar Power Naija programme began its rollout in Jigawa State, aiming to provide electricity to 25 million people through decentralized renewable solutions.

Complementing these state efforts, private organizations are deploying localized solar technology. The Solardero Foundation in Nigeria has distributed solar-powered school bags and provided complete solar setups to remote communities to combat energy poverty. In Senegal, specialized solar engineering is being utilized for agricultural pumping and domestic kits to promote energy autonomy in areas with insufficient grid access.
