Nigeria expands AI teacher training and digital workforce programmes

The Nigerian federal government announced a rollout to train about 11,700 teachers in Federal Unity Colleges in artificial intelligence. The initiative, disclosed by Folasade Boriowo of the Federal Ministry of Education, will be delivered in partnership with ICEDT Consult Limited and is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to accelerate digital transformation in education. It aims to equip teachers with AI‑related digital competencies to improve lesson delivery, assessment and overall learning outcomes for thousands of students.

Separately, the government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme continues to build a digital workforce, having trained nearly 300,000 Nigerians through learning centres and online platforms by the end of 2025. The programme now includes a placement hub to connect graduates with internships, jobs and freelance work. Analysts warn that while entry‑level talent pipelines are expanding, a shortage of mid‑level and senior engineers persists, stressing the need to convert skills into productive employment and economic growth.
