Nigeria expands CNG infrastructure to lower transport costs

Nigeria is accelerating its transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce transportation costs following the removal of petrol subsidies. The Federal Government has set a target to roll out one million CNG-powered vehicles nationwide, with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, directing intensified efforts to expand infrastructure and investment.

In Kano State, the CNG refueling network has grown to 12 stations within a year. This expansion includes the commissioning of two new NU Synergy outlets and a vehicle conversion center. These facilities allow motorists to refuel and convert vehicles in a single location. Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), noted that the rapid development demonstrates the potential for private investment in Nigeria’s clean mobility sector, leveraging the country’s significant natural gas reserves.

Domestic gas consumption in Nigeria has reached a milestone, with daily supply exceeding two billion cubic feet for the first time. The government's ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative aims to utilize these resources to stimulate economic growth and provide more affordable, environmentally friendly transport alternatives.
