Nigeria expands CNG use and gas reforms to drive industrial growth
The Nigerian federal government is promoting compressed natural gas (CNG) as a cheaper, cleaner fuel following the removal of the petrol subsidy. The initiative, led by the Presidential Initiative on CNG and EVs, has converted over 120,000 vehicles nationwide and is establishing new conversion centres and refuelling stations, especially in Port Harcourt.
At the same time, President Bola Tinubu’s energy reforms are positioning natural gas as the backbone of Nigeria’s industrialisation. Reforms have increased the national metering rate to about 57 %, lifted cost‑reflective electricity tariffs to 45 %, and boosted investor confidence, with the country’s share of African upstream final investment decisions projected to rise from 4 % in 2023 to roughly 40 % by 2025.
