Nigeria plans Energy Zones for 24-hour power supply

The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated discussions with electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to establish special Energy Zones. These zones are designed to provide stable, 24-hour electricity supply to homes, businesses, and industries in the country's highest-demand areas.

The proposed initiative targets three primary corridors: the Lagos axis, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, and the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe noted that the sector's challenges extend beyond generation and transmission to the capacity of the distribution network to deliver power to end users.

By addressing distribution bottlenecks, the government aims to unlock commercial and industrial demand while improving the revenue and collection performance of DisCos. This initiative is part of the administration's broader efforts to support economic growth through reliable energy infrastructure.

Separately, industry experts and stakeholders have highlighted the need for significant investment in Nigeria's gas and pipeline infrastructure to realize the country's energy potential. Experts suggest that billions of dollars are required to modernize aging networks and expand capacity to meet rising domestic and industrial demand.
