Nigeria expands LPG penetration programme to Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian federal government has expanded its National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme (NGLPP) to Akwa Ibom State, marking the second phase of a nationwide rollout under the Decade of Gas Initiative. The program aims to transition households from traditional fuels like firewood, charcoal, and kerosene to cleaner, more efficient liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

As part of the activation in Uyo, 27,000 filled LPG cylinders were distributed to beneficiaries in Akwa Ibom. To ensure sustainability, the initiative includes a Depot-Hub-Node cylinder exchange model designed to place refill points within one to two kilometers of participating communities. Beneficiaries are also set to receive up to six cylinder refills within their first year.

The government has set an ambitious target to reach five million Nigerian households with LPG by 2030, with a long-term goal of exceeding 10 million households by 2060. The program will cover all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, utilizing a digital monitoring platform with barcode-enabled tracking to monitor cylinder usage and household adoption rates.
