Nigeria faces Ebola preparedness concerns amid funding and enforcement gaps
Nigeria is facing questions regarding the utilization of N10 billion in emergency intervention funding approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen Ebola preparedness. Despite the disbursement, reports indicate a lack of public transparency regarding expenditures and persistent gaps in preparedness at airports and isolation facilities. Travelers have noted that digital health declaration requirements at international airports, such as Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, are not being actively enforced by officials upon arrival.
In response to the global alert on Ebola, the Ekiti State Government has intensified disease surveillance and rapid response mechanisms across its 16 Local Government Areas. The state has activated its public health emergency operation centre and launched sensitization programs for community leaders, health workers, and stakeholders to ensure early detection and containment of Ebola and diphtheria. State health officials emphasized the importance of proactive measures following the World Health Organization’s declaration of Ebola as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
