Ebola preparedness and response in Nigeria

Overview

Nigeria is facing scrutiny regarding its Ebola preparedness following the World Health Organization’s declaration of the virus as a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’. While President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved N10 billion in emergency intervention funding, concerns have been raised about a lack of transparency in expenditures and persistent gaps in isolation facilities and airport enforcement.

In response to the global alert, the Ekiti State Government has intensified disease surveillance and rapid response mechanisms across its 16 Local Government Areas. The state has activated a public health emergency operation centre and launched sensitization programs for health workers and community leaders to ensure early detection and containment of Ebola and diphtheria.
