Nigeria faces mounting insecurity and calls for electoral reforms ahead of 2027 vote

Civil society groups in Nigeria warned that the country is at a "dangerous crossroads" as rising insecurity, alleged electoral manipulation, and weakened democratic institutions converge into a national crisis. They urged the federal government to treat insecurity as a national protection issue, create a special committee, revive regional security cooperation with Sahel states, and appoint a high‑level envoy for the Sahel.

At the June 12 Commemoration Lecture in Abuja, stakeholders from the National Human Rights Commission and the newly opened Humphrey Nwosu Centre for Democracy and Human Rights called for comprehensive electoral reforms and stronger institutional independence before the 2027 general election. They emphasized the need for transparent, credible polls, judicial independence, and broader public participation to safeguard democratic governance.
