Nigeria Football Federation undergoes leadership overhaul and reform

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is undergoing a major leadership overhaul following the mass resignation of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several executive committee members. This leadership vacuum follows a period of poor performance by Nigeria’s national teams and a directive from President Bola Tinubu for comprehensive reforms.

FIFA has formally accepted these resignations and is consulting with Nigerian authorities to establish a roadmap for restructuring the federation. A high-level Nigerian delegation, including National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko, recently met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich to discuss these changes. The NFF has denied reports of a fake letter from FIFA alleging government interference, stating that discussions are focused on ensuring reforms align with international regulations.

In the interim, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme has been appointed as the interim General Secretary, and Dr. Ademola Olajire as interim Deputy General Secretary. The NFF has also suspended the elective congress previously scheduled for September 27.

Separately, an NFF Fact-Finding Committee report has raised concerns regarding financial disparities, alleging that board members and management staff receive payments while players and some officials are inadequately compensated. The report also investigated allegations of financial incentives involving coaches and officials regarding player selection.
