Nigeria Football Federation faces calls for leadership change after major setbacks

Stakeholders in Nigerian football are divided following a series of major setbacks for the national teams. The Super Falcons were eliminated by Cameroon in the WAFCON quarterfinals, ending their hopes for automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Additionally, the Flying Eagles lost to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B Under-20 Championship, ending their path to the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

In response to these failures, former international Segun Odegbami has called for the current Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership to step down, arguing that there must be consequences for administrative failure. Odegbami has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and has called for the suspension of the NFF’s 2026 Executive Committee elections, scheduled for September 27 in Lafia.

Other figures, including former Olympic gold medalist Abiodun Obafemi and CEO Ebi Egbe, have expressed concerns regarding the current state of football governance. While some advocate for immediate leadership changes and electoral suspensions to ensure reform, others remain divided on whether the upcoming elections can address the systemic issues facing the sport in Nigeria.
