Nigeria Football Federation leadership and performance crise

Following significant setbacks for Nigeria’s national football teams, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing intense scrutiny regarding its governance and leadership.

The crisis was precipitated by the Super Falcons’ elimination from the WAFCON quarterfinals and their subsequent 2-1 playoff defeat to South Africa, which ended their streak of appearing in every FIFA Women’s World Cup since 1991. Additionally, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In response, the NFF established a six-member fact-finding committee, chaired by Ambassador Fanny Amun and including former players such as Desire Oparanozie and Mutiu Adepoju, to investigate these international failures.

The crisis has escalated to the legislative level. The Nigerian Senate Committee on Sports held an emergency meeting with NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko to address the declining performance of national teams. Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Sports Committee, noted that the NSC and NFF must “close ranks,” observing that the two organizations are currently operating too far apart.

During the session, Ningi questioned why performance remains low despite significant federal financial incentives, including $100,000 payments to players and officials. The committee’s findings are intended to serve as a preamble to a more detailed report to be presented to the Senate.

Further setbacks have intensified calls for reform. The Flying Eagles recently lost to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B Under-20 Championship, ending their path to the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. In light of these failures, former international Segun Odegbami has called for the NFF leadership to step down and has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene by suspending the NFF’s 2026 Executive Committee elections, scheduled for September 27 in Lafia. Additionally, the Super Falcons' technical crew has been dismissed following their recent exit from international competition.
