Nigeria Football Federation faces leadership crisis

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing a leadership crisis following poor performances by its national teams. Fanny Amun, chairman of the NFF fact-finding committee, has resigned after submitting a report intended to investigate systemic issues within the federation’s administration. Amun stated his resignation was a move to protect the independence of the findings, ensuring no external influence could alter the report before its submission.

Simultaneously, reports indicate that nine members of the 13-member NFF Executive Committee may resign en-masse. This potential mass departure follows intense criticism regarding the federation's management, particularly after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1991. The Super Eagles also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A mass resignation could lead to the appointment of a Normalisation Committee to oversee a new governance structure for Nigerian football.
