Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau resigns amid leadership crisis
Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and several members of the Executive Committee have reportedly resigned. Reports suggest that as many as eight of the 13 board members have stepped down following intense pressure regarding the administration of Nigerian football.
The leadership crisis follows a series of major setbacks for Nigeria's national teams, most notably the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending their continuous participation since 1991. Additionally, the men's senior team, the Super Eagles, failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Simultaneously, the NFF is facing scrutiny from security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). These agencies are investigating the management of a N17 billion Federal Government intervention fund approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, which was intended to cover outstanding wages and bonuses for national team players.
In response to the unfolding situation, the NFF Congress has summoned an emergency meeting in Abuja to discuss the stability, governance, and future of the federation.
