Nigeria Football Federation faces probe into ₦12bn fund

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing scrutiny as anti-corruption agencies launch investigations into the management of a ₦12 billion federal intervention fund. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are examining how the funds, approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, were utilized. The money was specifically intended to settle long-standing debts, including unpaid wages and bonuses for national team players and salaries for coaches.

The NFF confirmed the investigation in a response to a Freedom of Information request, stating that relevant financial records and utilization logs have been handed over to the agencies.

Amidst these financial probes, a separate fact-finding committee has been established to address broader systemic issues within Nigerian football, such as grassroots development, infrastructure, and player welfare. Former national goalkeeper Etta Egbe has expressed optimism regarding this committee, citing the credibility of its members and urging stakeholders to remain patient while the panel works to provide practical recommendations for the sport.
