Nigeria football undergoes major governance overhaul

Nigeria is undergoing a major restructuring of its football architecture following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The overhaul follows poor performances by national teams, including the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. As part of this process, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership resigned, and an interim management team led by Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme was installed.

The National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Shehu Dikko, is planning a FIFA-backed “Normalisation Committee” to oversee the transition. However, the process has faced criticism from stakeholders like Harrison Jalla, Chairman of the Advocacy for Nigeria Football Reform Initiative. Critics have raised concerns regarding a lack of transparency and accountability in the NSC's reform process, specifically citing a recent meeting in Zurich with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

There are also concerns that the influence of former football officials, such as Amaju Melvin Pinnick, could derail the reforms. Stakeholders are calling for a more inclusive process that allows federating units to nominate representatives to the Normalisation Committee to ensure the transition is democratic and transparent.
