Nigeria forms committee to combat power infrastructure vandalism

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has established a ministerial committee to combat the vandalism of power infrastructure. The initiative aims to protect electricity generation, transmission, and distribution assets to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply for households and industries.

Repeated attacks on the electricity value chain have caused frequent supply disruptions, increased government repair costs, and undermined sector investments. To address this, the committee will coordinate efforts between security agencies and power sector stakeholders. Key strategies include enforcing existing laws, deploying technology for asset protection, and launching public awareness campaigns.

The inaugural meeting included the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, along with representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The committee’s work will be aligned with the ONSA’s critical infrastructure unit, treating power assets as a matter of national security.
