Overview

Nigeria is pursuing a strategic shift toward a decentralized electricity model to mitigate grid instability. To combat recurring grid collapses and infrastructure vandalism, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe has established a ministerial committee involving the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to treat power assets as a matter of national security. Tegbe has also announced the development of new eastern and western electricity grids, organizing the country into three strategic energy zones. At the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit 2026, Tegbe introduced a roadmap to transition from designing reforms to delivering measurable improvements. This strategy focuses on four priorities: enhancing energy zones, strengthening sector liquidity, optimizing assets, and expanding infrastructure. The government has identified three priority economic energy corridors: Lagos–Ogun, Benin–Enugu–Port Harcourt, and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano. Regarding debt, Tegbe noted that 1.23 trillion naira has been paid toward the estimated 3.3 trillion naira in legacy liabilities. Furthermore, the government intends to reassess the role of NBET following reports of alleged financial irregularities. Decentralization efforts are advancing through projects like the 17.7MW interconnected mini-grids in Oyo State.
