Overview

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has advocated for a strategic shift toward prioritizing electricity grid resilience as a core component of national and international energy security. Speaking at a summit in Dubai, Tegbe argued that security planning must expand beyond hydrocarbon reserves to include the stability of grid infrastructure, critical mineral supply chains, and capital institutions.

Following these calls for systemic resilience, the Minister has also sought domestic intervention to address financial losses within the sector. Tegbe requested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) assist in prosecuting electricity infrastructure vandalism and energy theft. He noted that the Ministry of Power lacks the statutory authority to prosecute offenders directly and highlighted that the theft of physical components and unpaid electricity by consumers result in billions of naira in annual losses.
