Nigeria: Hostages rescued from kidnappers and terrorist camps

Recent rescue operations in north-central Nigeria have freed dozens of hostages held by armed criminals and suspected terrorists. In Kogi State, a joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Navy, police, and local vigilantes rescued 16 abductees, including six adults, six women, and four children, from the Ofu area. Survivors reported that kidnappers demanded ransoms ranging from N50 million to N100 million and threatened to sell captives to ritualists if payments were not met.

In a separate but related context of mass abductions, 308 people were recently freed from forest camps in Kainji Lake National Park. These captives, many of whom were taken from villages like Woro during attacks in February, are currently receiving medical treatment at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital in Ilorin. Medical staff report that many survivors are suffering from malnutrition, skin diseases, fractures, and psychological trauma. Some victims described extreme conditions, including being fed minimal rations and witnessing births conducted in primitive conditions while in captivity.
