Nigeria kidnapping and insurgent security ops
Overview
Throughout August 2026, Nigerian security forces conducted widespread operations against kidnapping syndicates, bandits, and insurgents, resulting in numerous rescues and tactical engagements.
A major confrontation in Kebbi State on August 10 involved more than 200 armed men on motorcycles attacking a security camp in Makuku, Sakaba Local Government Area. The ensuing gun battle resulted in the deaths of ten police officers, two civilians, and one vigilante. At least 17 suspected bandits were killed. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu later held a memorial parade in Abuja to honor the fallen Special Intervention Squad officers, vowing that the force remains “resolute in its mission to confront banditry, terrorism, and violent criminality.”
Rescue efforts intensified mid-month. In a large-scale, intelligence-driven operation, the National Counter-Terrorism Centre and other agencies rescued 308 individuals from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in Niger State, including victims from the Woro community in Kwara State. In Kogi State, the 21 Battalion rescued 13 victims from the Alloma-Ejule Road, and troops also rescued a pregnant woman abandoned by kidnappers. In Plateau State, security forces rescued a victim with gunshot wounds in Bokkos Local Government Area.
In Niger State, President Bola Tinubu ordered a coordinated rescue operation following a mass abduction during weekly prayers at a mosque in Borgu district. While local officials reported at least 60 people were kidnapped, some accounts suggest the number could reach 600, with reports of 30 fatalities. The attack caused significant displacement, with approximately 2,000 people fleeing into the Benin Republic.
In Zamfara, the 1 Brigade arrested three suspects, Lukman Sulaiman, Nafiu Isa, and Adamu Lawali, after recovering an AK-103-2 rifle concealed in a bag of millet. Soldiers also rescued six people following a terrorist ambush on the Anka–Gummi route.
