Nigeria ops: school rescue, headmaster kidnapping, UN probe

Overview

Security operations in Nigeria continued to intensify through mid‑July 2026. On 10 July, a joint task‑force of the Army, Police, DSS, intelligence agencies, local hunters and Amotekun vigilantes rescued 44 pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire, Oyo State after 56 days in the forest around Old Oyo National Park. The raid claimed the lives of Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac and another soldier, and several kidnappers were arrested. President Tinubu and senior military leaders praised the operation and urged similar intelligence‑driven actions for remaining hostages in Borno, Kwara and other states.

The following day, 60‑year‑old headmaster Kolawale Owoade of Nomadic Basic School in Igbojaye was seized; kidnappers demanded a N30 million ransom. Security agencies, including the Army, Police, DSS, CSDF and Amotekun, launched a search that recovered his motorcycle on 12 July, while teachers’ unions and legislators called for stronger protection of educators.

From 3‑9 July the armed forces broadened their campaign, freeing civilians, destroying insurgent supply bases, seizing illegal oil‑refining equipment and interdicting sea‑pirate activities across the North‑East, North‑West, North‑Central and Southern zones. Air‑force precision strikes and reconnaissance supported ground actions, and the chief of defence staff highlighted the importance of community intelligence.

On 13 July, Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola visited FOB Imeko in Ogun State, commending troops for discipline and urging respect for civilians. The same day Governor Seyi Makinde announced that the state would provide medical monitoring for rescued victims and called for an independent United Nations‑linked investigation into the Oriire kidnapping, citing the need for transparency and accountability. The combined operations, lauded by national leaders, aim to dismantle kidnapping networks, insurgent logistics and illicit trafficking ahead of the 2027 elections.
