Nigeria House of Representatives orders probe into NYSC member's death
The Nigerian House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the death of Etimbuk Sunday, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, at the orientation camp in Awgu, Enugu State. The motion, sponsored by Representative Unyime Idem, was raised as a matter of urgent public importance following concerns regarding medical negligence and the quality of medication administered at the camp clinic.
Mr. Sunday, the former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly fell ill in early October with symptoms of malaria or typhoid. After receiving treatment and being discharged with oral medication, his condition deteriorated, leading to his death on October 11. Lawmakers raised specific concerns regarding a potential delay in hospital referral and reports that the deceased's body was returned to his family with visible bruises.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched its own investigation. Preliminary clinical assessments suggest the cause of death may have been acute kidney injury resulting from severe dehydration and shock, though the agency noted it has not yet determined if the administered medicines contributed to the fatality.
