NYSC member death investigation in Nigeria
Overview
Etimbuk Daniel, a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University, died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State on October 11. Reports indicate that Daniel sought treatment for a headache, but his condition allegedly worsened after being administered medication. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) called for an investigation, noting that a doctor reportedly identified the medication as fake and that there were delays in approving his transfer to a hospital.
Following the incident, the Nigerian House of Representatives ordered a probe into the death, citing concerns over medical negligence and the quality of medication at the camp clinic. Lawmakers also raised questions regarding a potential delay in hospital referral and reports of visible bruises on the deceased.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has also launched an investigation. While preliminary clinical assessments suggest the cause of death may have been acute kidney injury resulting from severe dehydration and shock, the agency has not yet determined if the administered medicines contributed to the fatality.
