Nigeria Immigration Service expands diaspora passport services and border security

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is conducting several international initiatives to support Nigerians living abroad and enhance domestic border security.

In Canada, the NiDEC Passport Intervention Programme successfully captured 2,233 applicants across five provinces, including Toronto, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatoon, and Calgary. Participants reported efficient processing, with some receiving passports within four to seven days.

In the United Kingdom, the NIS has extended its Special Passport Intervention Exercise to October 30, 2026, due to high demand. The exercise includes designated centers in London, Manchester, and Aberdeen, with a venue for Cardiff to be announced. Applicants must book appointments through official portals.

Additionally, the NIS has entered an 18-month partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Government of Italy to strengthen border management. This project will provide 30 operational vehicles and 60 computers to improve surveillance and operational effectiveness at remote and high-risk border locations.
