Nigeria inaugurates 100 electric buses for civil servants

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme, beginning with the inauguration of 100 electric buses intended to support federal civil servants. The first phase involves the delivery of 37 buses, which will initially operate on selected pilot routes before expanding to Federal Secretariats across the country.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, described the initiative as an investment in worker productivity, safety, and financial stability. The project is funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. To ensure long-term sustainability and maintenance, a Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to manage the fleet.

Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), noted that the rollout is part of a broader strategy to develop electric vehicle infrastructure, including installations at 16 universities. The government is also promoting the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce transportation costs, noting increased private-sector participation in gas retailing.
