Overview
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme, an initiative aimed at providing electric buses to federal civil servants to improve productivity and financial stability. The program began with the inauguration of 100 electric buses, with an initial delivery of 37 vehicles intended for pilot routes and Federal Secretariats.
To support this transition, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has deployed electric vehicle infrastructure at approximately 16 universities. Parallel to the electric vehicle rollout, the government is expanding Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, noting that the number of licensed gas retailers has increased from four to 81.
As the deployment progresses, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has issued warnings regarding the safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Officials highlighted that electric vehicle fires can be caused by thermal runaway, producing toxic vapors and posing risks of reignition that require specialized equipment and cooling techniques to manage.
