Nigeria INEC Appeals Court Rulings Over 2027 Election Timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warned that two recent Federal High Court judgments could destabilise preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general election unless clarified by higher courts. Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the commission has filed appeals against the May 20, 2026 Youth Party v. INEC ruling and the May 26, 2026 Social Democratic Party v. INEC decision, which questioned and nullified parts of INEC’s compressed timetable.

Amupitan emphasized that a coordinated electoral calendar is essential for activities such as verification of party membership registers, monitoring primaries, uploading results, ballot printing, BVAS configuration, and training of election officials. He assured party leaders at a consultative meeting in Abuja that, despite the legal disputes, INEC remains committed to conducting the 2027 election in accordance with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The commission also noted ongoing logistical preparations, including voter‑registration updates for the upcoming Ekiti governorship poll and scheduled bye‑elections in six constituencies, underscoring its broader effort to maintain election credibility while the appeals are pending.
