Nigeria intensifies voter education efforts for future elections
Nigerian institutions are intensifying efforts to promote voter education and civic engagement ahead of future elections.
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) launched a sensitisation programme titled “Project New Nigeria and Voter Education” at Abia State University. Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku emphasized the importance of equipping citizens with the knowledge required for the democratic process, specifically targeting university students to combat disengagement among the youth. The initiative includes providing educational materials to deserving students and encouraging eligible citizens to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
Simultaneously, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on its officials to maintain high levels of professionalism to rebuild public trust. During a capacity-building workshop in Ondo State, Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke instructed Voter Education Desk Officers to provide accurate, accessible information to all demographics, including women, persons with disabilities, and remote communities. The goal is to tackle voter apathy and misinformation in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
