Nigeria joins IEA as energy demand and gas ambitions grow

Nigeria has officially joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an Association country, a move intended to support the nation's energy and economic priorities. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol met with Nigerian officials in Abuja to discuss leveraging the agency's expertise to strengthen energy security and expand access to electricity and clean cooking solutions.

This development occurs amid a broader shift in global energy dynamics. A report from S&P Global indicates that emerging economies could drive a 60 percent increase in total global energy demand by 2060. While renewable energy capacity is expanding rapidly in the Global South, experts suggest that meeting this demand will require a diverse energy mix, including oil and gas.

In Nigeria specifically, experts warn that fully harnessing the country's 215.19 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves will require significant modernization of its 2,500-kilometer pipeline infrastructure. Challenges such as aging systems, insecurity, and environmental concerns must be addressed through investment in intelligent and secure distribution networks to support domestic and export demand.
