Nigeria joins International Energy Agency as Association Country, boosting coverage to 80% of global demand

Nigeria has been admitted to the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an Association Country, making it the first OPEC member to join the agency. The move expands the IEA’s coverage to more than 80 % of global energy demand, up from 40 % when the programme began in 2015.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo welcomed the admission, saying it will deepen Nigeria’s engagement in global energy governance and help achieve universal electricity access, industrialisation and sustainable development. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the minister were thanked by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, who called the inclusion an “important advance in global energy governance.”

As an Association Country, Nigeria will gain greater access to IEA research, policy expertise and technical cooperation on energy security, gas development, electricity access, clean cooking and decentralised solar solutions. The partnership is expected to attract investment, support the country’s refining sector and reinforce the resilience of African and international fuel markets.
