Nigeria labor leaders threaten indefinite strike following warning action

Nigerian workers recently conducted a three-day warning strike to protest economic conditions and government policies. The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has called on organized labor to escalate to an indefinite nationwide strike and a “total shutdown of the system” if the Federal Government fails to respond to their demands.

Andrew Emelieze, National Coordinator of the FWF, noted that previous attempts at negotiation and dialogue have not yielded results. He suggested that the recent warning strike, which included the weekend, may have seen limited compliance due to its timing, but emphasized that a more forceful action may be necessary if the government remains adamant.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) described the strike as a “referendum on a failed government,” criticizing the Tinubu administration’s economic policies for triggering widespread poverty. The APM argued that the current administration has failed to protect citizens from the consequences of its reforms, such as subsidy removal, and questioned the government's ability to seek a second term amidst rising costs of living and diminishing transparency.
