Labor unrest and strike threats in Nigeria

Overview

Labor unrest has emerged in Nigeria through various sectoral threats. In late September, electricity workers issued a three-day ultimatum threatening a nationwide blackout following an incident in Bauchi State where Jos Electricity Distribution staff allegedly faced assault and detention by Nigerian Air Force personnel.

Public servants represented by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) and the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) have moved toward industrial action. Following the expiration of a September 30 deadline, the JNPSNC initiated a three-day nationwide warning strike at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, affecting federal, state, and local government employees. The strike was scheduled to run through Sunday, October 4.

The action follows the government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 21. Labor groups are seeking significant economic reforms to combat rising living costs, including reducing the petrol pump price to N500 per litre, granting an immediate wage award, and commencing negotiations for a new national minimum wage due in 2027.

Following the warning strike, the FWF has called for an escalation to an indefinite nationwide strike and a “total shutdown of the system” if the Federal Government fails to respond. FWF National Coordinator Andrew Emelieze noted that while the weekend timing of the warning strike may have resulted in limited compliance, more forceful action may be necessary. Additionally, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) characterized the strike as a “referendum on a failed government,” criticizing the administration’s economic policies and subsidy removal for triggering widespread poverty.
